Secretary of State for Telecommunications & Information Society, Spain
Mr. Victor Calvo-Sotelo (53) became Spain's Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Information Society in 2011, following a longstanding career of over 20 years working in the promotion of infrastructure, both in the public and private sectors.
As part of his current role, Mr. Calvo-Sotelo is promoting the design and implementation of public policies to advance the information society in Spain, which include undertaking specific interventions to expand access to broadband and further promote the utilization of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in all aspects of Spain's social and economic activities.
One of his most important achievements was the approval in 2014 of a new Spanish Telecommunications Act which was passed by Congress with almost unanimous support of more than ninety per cent votes in favour which ensure a stable legal framework to encourage investment .Other flagship initiatives undertaken by Spain within the 4 years of Mr. Calvo-Sotelo's leadership include the acceleration of of ultrafast broadband in Spain, the successful transition to digital TV and completion of digital dividend, the implementation of the digital signature or the approval of a new Digital Agenda for Spain.
Mr. Calvo-Sotelo is also President of Red.es, President of Spain's National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE), President of Spain's National Center of the Application of Open Source ICTs (CENATIC) and Patron of the Barcelona Mobile World Capital Foundation.
Prior to his current role, Mr. Calvo- Sotelo was President and CEO of Correos (Spain's National Postal Operator), Undersecretary in the Ministry of Infrastructure, and Member of Spain's National Parliament. Mr. Calvo Sotelo has also worked in the private sector for companies such as Vodafone, AUNA, Ferrovial or the Betchel Group. Mr. Calvo Sotelo is Civil Engineer and has an MBA from INSEAD.
